BIOGRAPHY

I thought I'd ask my team mates Alex and Emlyn to write a few words about me. Strangely, they seem to have hit on a common theme. No idea why.

Always of the belief that if one man can do it then he can too, once John gained knowledge that a race to the North Pole existed, it was simply a job of "persuading" other team members with his sheer physical presence to sign up for the challenge.

John's spare time is mostly spent destroying small people on the hockey pitch, while also scaring the life out of pisteurs with the speed that he launches himself down the European Alps.

The other members of Polar Horizon are currently making a book as to whether the Arctic equipment manufacturers will actually stock boots in John's shoe size, however, the upside of such a dilemma is that no self-respecting polar bear will venture near the team's sleeping quarters having seen John's tracks for fear of biting off more than it can chew!

CHARITIES

Cancer Research UK is the world's leading independent organisation dedicated to cancer research. It supports research into all aspects of cancer through the work of more than 3,000 scientists, doctors and nurses. Cancer Research UK is one of the few organisations of its kind with the ability to take advances in basic research all the way from the laboratory to the patient. It is a European leader in the development of novel anti-cancer therapies and its extensive programme of research in clinical units ensures that new treatments reach patients as quickly as possible. Key to its success are the flagship Clinical Cancer Research Centres. These bring together world-class scientists and doctors on major hospital sites working side-by-side and with cancer patients on innovative areas of research — such as using viruses to kill cancer cells and tailoring cancer treatments to a person's genetic make-up.

Wooden Spoon is rugby's charity supporting mentally, physically and socially disadvantaged children and young people. With the help of hardworking staff and volunteers, Wooden Spoon has committed over £11 million in spending for projects for children and young people. It has organised over 1,500 events and had 20,000 ties worn by its loyal members and supporters. Wooden Spoon's strength and purpose, however, have been to convert the funds derived from its fundraising activities to benefit socially, mentally or physically disadvantaged children and young people. It creates events and activities that make demands on both sporting and social prowess. The charity is driven by a collective ambition to see Wooden Spoon continue to grow in stature and thereby continue to have a positive impact on disadvantaged children and young people throughout the United Kingdom.
