BIOGRAPHY
Born and brought up in Manchester, I left school at 16 and tried various career paths before settling for the motor trade.
I worked my way up to area manager for a large fast-fit company before leaving and starting out on my own in 1978. After one year at a fast-fit clutch and brake centre in Bristol I opened a motor parts wholesaling business. I built it up and sold it in 2004.
In between, I married Nuala and had three children, my fellow adventurers Thomas, Charlotte and Naomi.
I only started having adventures when I was 47. I have trekked in Nepal, Vietnam and Peru, plus various backpacking trips in the UK and Ireland.
